Avoid Scams - Get on the "National Do Not Call List"!

After meeting with a new client this week, she told me she received an unsolicited call from an agent asking for an appointment with her to ensure she was getting all the benefits she was entitled to. Doesn’t that sound like the commercial we see on TV so often?  It sure does!  Be sure you are working with a professional agent/broker and not one that is bending or breaking Medicare rules with their marketing and advertising tactics.

Please protect yourselves by enrolling in the National Do Not Call Registry here or call 1-888-382-1222 (TTY: 1-866-290-4236). This registry tells telemarketers which numbers are considered off-limits.  You can prevent unwanted sales calls or at least reduce the number of calls you receive to avoid some sneaky sales tactics and bait-and-switch offers.

  • Both landline and cell phone numbers can be registered.
  • Registration is free.
  • It may take about 30 days for calls to stop.
  • Unwanted sales calls can be reported after a number has been on the Do Not Call Registry for 31 days.
  • Your registration does not expire.
  • Some calls, including those related to debt collection, surveys, political groups, and charities, are still allowed.

Calls to look out for:

  • Watch out for call spoofing.  Scammers can ‘spoof’ their number to mimic the number of a legitimate agency such as Medicare.  I received a call that showed up on my Caller ID as “Medicare” with the person asking if I had received my new plastic Medicare card!  There’s no such thing.
  • Be wary of robocalls where you get a recorded message instead of a live person.

Again, please protect yourself from these unwanted and potentially harmful scams.  When you get a call from a scammer, hang up or just don’t answer at all.  Also, report unwanted calls.  You can report unwanted calls to the FTC. You can also report Medicare fraud to Medicare by calling 1-800-633-4227 (TTY: 1-877-2048).
